Why Low Salt?

90% of Americans eat too much salt, and it's hurting us.

It's a tragic fact of modern life – over 90% of us eat an unhealthy amount of salt. The consequences of this excess sodium are serious: high blood pressure, heart problems, obesity, and even cancer.

Unfortunately, drastically reducing sodium from your diet can feel impossible. I know, because I've been there too! I had to learn the hard way after my husband was diagnosed with Ménière’s Disease, a rare inner-ear disorder. He was a young professional in his early thirties traveling the globe when his world quite literally turned upside down. He was instructed by his doctor to follow a strict low-sodium diet of 1,000mg, that is less than 1⁄2 teaspoon of salt a day.

I know the pain of standing in the grocery store aisle overwhelmed by nutrition labels. I know the frustration of another night of bland soup, plain chicken and vegetables, feeling like it's impossible to balance the right amount of sodium and still eat delicious flavorful tasting food.

But it doesn't have to be this way! Through years of study, trial, and error, I've learned how to thrive without salt. Now my mission is to make your Low Salt Journey simple and straightforward so you can be healthy and a total foodie while skipping the struggle of figuring it all out on your own. Low Salt doesn't mean no taste. These recipes are healthy, simple, & delicious!

Low Salt Kitchen exists to share the knowledge I've gained over the past ten years cooking in the kitchen. As a result of my husband's diagnosis, we felt uniformed and alone. We had an uphill journey, we understood very little about sodium and there were no great resources to guide us. The recipes we did find had no spice, felt outdated and were unaspiring to cook, much less eat.

I know how hard it feels to begin this journey. The good news is, you're not alone! I'm here to guide and empower you along the way so you can take control of your health and happiness.

I remember how scary it felt wondering if we would ever be able to enjoy delicious food again, which is one of life's greatest pleasures. I'm happy to report that you can still eat the food you love – bacon, pizza, Mexican food, Asian cuisine – it's all possible with a little bit of know-how and the help of Low Salt Kitchen!
